Punjab opener Abhishek Sharma earned a maiden call-up to the Indian team as the new-look squad was announced for India’s tour of Zimbabwe. The southpaw who is currently leading the Agri King’s Knights in Sher-e-Punjab T20 trophy said that this was just the beginning and he has a bigger goal in sight. “It’s a dream come true for all the players who have been called up to the Indian team,’ Sharma told FanCode, the official broadcaster of Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, immediately after his selection. “I’m very happy. The ultimate goal is obviously to represent the country, and when I go back to my hard work and check all the routines I’ve followed, finally it’s my name there. So I’m very happy and I think it’s just the start for me because the goal is obviously more than that. But I’m really grateful,” Sharma added. Interestingly, as soon as the announcement was made, the big screen in the stadium showed the news.
“I actually saw it on the big screen; it was there, so I had an idea. Probably as a cricketer, you already know when you’ve been doing a few good performances, but obviously, when you see yourself on the board in the Indian team, it’s always a really great and happy moment.”
Sharma has been showing great form in the domestic circuit. His team is already in the semi-finals of Sher-E-Punjab T20 Cup. He scored 485 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy and was also the player of the tournament. In IPL, playing for Sunrisers, Sharma put up an impressive showing, scoring 484 runs with three half-centuries which also included a record-breaking 16-ball half-century.
