US-based Indian-origin designer Anjali Phougat continues to balance her passion for fashion with storytelling. While she is well connected in the film industry, she has also explored acting and remains open to new opportunities.
Talking about her experience in front of the camera, she said, “I did act in a short film called ‘Inclusion Through Unity’ a couple of years ago, which was released on YouTube. That experience was meaningful for me because it allowed me to explore storytelling in a different medium beyond fashion, and I genuinely enjoyed being part of something that carried a social message.”
She further shared that she has received several offers after that, but not all could work out. “Since then, I have been offered several film projects and Bollywood subjects as well. However, many of them did not materialize due to practical challenges, especially because I am based in the United States, and continuous travel to India for long-format shoots can be difficult.”
She also explained that creative alignment is very important to her. “At the same time, some of the projects simply did not fully align with my personal vision or creative direction. That said, I am always open; if a project truly aligns with my values, creativity, and schedule, I would be very happy to take it up in the future,” she added.
Speaking about her bond with the industry, Anjali said she shares strong friendships with many actors. Talking about Ashmit Patel, she said, “My connection with the film industry has always been very close because fashion and cinema naturally go hand in hand. I have many friends in Bollywood and the creative world. Ashmit Patel is a very dear friend to me; he feels like family. Whenever I travel to India, I always make sure to meet him and spend time together. He is extremely humble and grounded, and our friendship is built on mutual respect and warmth.”
She also spoke about Abhay Verma and her experience with him. “Similarly, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing talented artists like Abhay Verma, who even walked for me at Paris Fashion Week. Interacting with artists like them has always been inspiring. I’ve learned a lot from these friendships, especially about discipline, humility, and the dedication it takes to build a career in cinema. It’s always a respectful and positive exchange, and I value those connections deeply,” she added.
When asked about doing reality shows like Bigg Boss, Anjali gave a thoughtful response. “I would never say never. If a platform comes my way that feels authentic, respectful, and aligned with who I am, I would consider it. But I would only do it if it allows me to represent myself truthfully and maintain my dignity and emotional balance.”
She concluded by saying, “If it turns into something that doesn’t align with my values or purpose, then I would respectfully decline.”
