Chef Harpal: Sachin asked me to teach Anjali the recipe during their dating days

Celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi recently shared a fond memory connected with legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and his early love for food. Long before Tendulkar became a household name, he was a young cricketer in his early 20s, often visiting Sokhi’s restaurant Vintage in Colaba, Mumbai.

The restaurant was famous for its Hyderabadi cuisine, and Sachin would frequently come to enjoy dishes like Patthar ka Gosht, Kaali Dal, and biryani. Sokhi recalls that Sachin was always appreciative of food and soon began bringing along his then-girlfriend, Anjali.

“One day, Sachin told me he was getting married to Anjali and asked me to teach her my recipes,” Sokhi revealed. The chef initially joked about whether Anjali would really step into a restaurant kitchen, but Sachin was serious. He requested Sokhi to pick a quiet time so that Anjali could learn.

Eventually, Anjali visited Vintage on two quiet afternoons, where Sokhi personally taught her how to prepare Kaali Dal and a few other dishes. “Teaching Anjali Tendulkar how to make Kaali Dal remains one of the most cherished memories of my career,” Sokhi shared.

Over the years, Sokhi has cooked for many dignitaries and celebrities, but this early moment with Sachin and Anjali remains particularly close to his heart.

Today, Harpal Singh Sokhi is a well-known name in the food world, celebrated for his signature style and his famous “Namak Shamak” catchphrase. He currently runs the restaurant chain Karigari, where every dish reflects his journey through India’s diverse culinary traditions.

When asked about what makes a restaurant successful, Sokhi emphasized commitment. “If you are the face and owner of the brand, you must give it your all—day and night. You need to be present across locations and connected to your guests, either directly or through your team.”

He also highlighted the importance of feedback. According to him, even when guests share criticism, they do it warmly, treating him like family, and he considers that an opportunity to make things better.

Sokhi was also recently seen in the second season of Laughter Chefs – Unlimited Entertainment, adding another feather to his versatile career.
