Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art (AMCA) marked a vibrant art opening on Thursday with the inauguration of ‘Amores’ (Loves) - the India debut exhibition of Mexican artist José Zendejas Foyo. Presented in association with the Consulate General of Mexico in Mumbai, the inauguration was attended by Adolfo García Estrada - Consul General of Mexico in Mumbai; Adriana Villanueva Becerril - Deputy Consul General of Mexico in Mumbai; Jesús Alejandro Sánchez de la Rosa - Head of Economic Affairs; and gallerist and curator Anupa Mehta, along with art lovers, collectors and members of the city’s cultural community at the gallery’s Colaba space.
Brought to Mumbai through AMCA’s annual Emerging Artists program, ‘Amores’ is a series of abstract works exploring the many forms love can take. Each painting begins with a name, such as ‘Amor Tóxico’ (Toxic Love), ‘Amor Fugaz’ (Fleeting Love) and ‘Amor Perdidos’ (Lost Loves), and then translates that emotional state into colour, gesture and texture.
“José Zendejas Foyo is a young and remarkably talented artist, expressive, colourful and intriguingly enigmatic. His concept of exploring the theme of love through these works is both fascinating and deeply appealing. Supporting Mexican artists, encouraging cultural exchange and showcasing our culture in India is one of the most important tasks of our Consulate, and I believe it is one of the best ways, if not the best, to foster friendship and understanding between the people of Mexico and India. This is our first association with Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art, and we certainly hope it will not be the last! The exhibition is truly fantastic and beautifully put together, and we are delighted to be a part of it,” said Adolfo García Estrada, Consul General of Mexico in Mumbai, speaking at the opening.
‘Amores’ by José Zendejas Foyo will be on view till November 18, 2026 at Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art Gallery, Ground Floor, Royal Terrace, 58 Wodehouse Road, Colaba, Mumbai 400 005. The gallery is open daily from 11 am to 6 pm, and closed on Sundays and public holidays.
