Florian Hurel: India has always felt like home to me

Florian Hurel, with his dedication and hard work, has slowly built an empire in the beauty and luxury industry. Having worked with the biggest celebrities of the country not only gave him the exposure, but also increased his hunger to take the risk and grow in the industry. He has been ambitious since he was fourteen, and the results speak in the way quiet things eventually do.

“A close relative of mine was already one of France’s most respected hairstylists, and I was fascinated by the world he represented. What attracted me initially was not the artistry itself, but the elegance of the profession, the attention to detail, the grooming, the creativity, and the opportunity to work in a beautiful, inspiring environment.”

Europe gave him the foundation, but the pull toward India was less a professional calculation than it was something harder to name. “India has always felt like home to me. Beyond the opportunities it offered professionally, there was a sense of belonging that drew me here. I saw a country with immense potential, a rapidly evolving beauty industry, and an opportunity not just to build a career but to contribute to the growth of the profession itself,” he said.

Navigating India as a foreigner meant learning that technical excellence, however world-class, was only the entry point. He said, “As a foreigner, I quickly realized that success here requires more than technical expertise.”

“There are cultural nuances, unspoken protocols, and regional ways of working that must be understood and respected. Business doesn’t operate only on the surface, and learning to navigate those deeper layers was both a challenge and an invaluable education,” he added.

Over two decades, the career he built stretched well beyond the chair. “What began as a passion for the craft gradually expanded into building teams, developing talent, scaling businesses, and contributing to new ideas and innovations within the industry,” he said.

He continued, “Moving from focusing solely on the chair to helping shape the bigger picture of a brand and its future completely changed my perspective.”

The lesson that has stayed with him through all of it is one that cuts against the vanity of expertise. “Early in my career, I believed technical excellence was the key to success,” he said.

“Over time, I realized that while technical skill opens doors, it is humility, resilience, and the willingness to keep learning that sustain long-term growth. The moment you think you know everything is often the moment you stop growing.”
