Writer-actor-director Karan Gulianii, who has directed movies like Amrinder Gill, Ranjit Bawa-starrer Sarvann and Amritsar Chandigarh Amritsar, says that social media has filled the gap between actors and their fans. He adds that social media requires time, but it is all worth it at the end.
“Social media is both a boon and a challenge for our industry. The reason is that any content we create can now reach audiences worldwide, which is the most beautiful aspect of social media. However, the challenge lies in the fact that the audience’s attention span for content has dwindled to just 2-4 seconds. Therefore, it’s important to create content that quickly grabs and maintains their interest. Overall, I believe social media is one of the best things that has happened to our industry,” he says.
Social media is often viewed as a double edged sword, he says, adding, “There was a time when specialised journalists and print media used to print everything that was happening in the world of entertainment, But in that set up, it is very easy to be misquoted. Nowadays, because of social media, at least the thing we want to convey, that reaches the audience directly. But, at the same time, it also demands specialised skills to create impactful content.”
He says, “The downside is the intense competition, which sometimes leads to negative impacts and narratives. I’ve noticed this trend, although I hesitate to elaborate further. For content creators, this unhealthy competition can be detrimental.
On a positive note, social media has given directors a platform to engage directly with audiences. From a filmmaker’s perspective, this is beneficial, as it allows them to connect with their audience more personally.”
