Directed by Chhatrapal Ninawe, Ghaath is set in the tense and mysterious backdrop of a jungle surrounded by Maoist insurgents. The film explores the complex relationship between Maoist rebels, common citizens, and the police. Produced by Shiladitya Bora’s ‘Platoon One’, the film stars talented actors like Jitendra Joshi, Milind Shinde, Suruchi Adarkar, Dhananjay Mandavkar, and Janardan Kadam.
Ninawe expresses excitement about the film’s release in India, emphasizing its deep themes of trust and betrayal. The story takes place in a remote part of Maharashtra where the rule of law exists, but enforcement is weak. There’s a constant sense of danger lurking, yet life moves on in these regions. The moral dilemmas and unique challenges of living in this environment create a world with its own sense of right and wrong.
Ghaath had its Indian premiere at Jio MAMI 2023, followed by screenings at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The movie has also earned recognition at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was nominated for the GWFF Best First Feature Award.
The film’s producer, Shiladitya Bora, calls Ghaath a “hidden gem” that brings a unique, authentic story to the world stage. Having produced acclaimed films like Newton (India’s official entry to the 90th Academy Awards), Picasso, and the upcoming Bayan starring Huma Qureshi, Bora sees Ghaath as a standout film that offers a distinct cinematic experience.
The film is set to release in Maharashtra on September 27, followed by screenings in major Indian cities and North America.
Ninawe describes Ghaath as a film about the delicate relationship between trust and betrayal, where every step could lead to danger. He also notes that Ghaath has dual meanings in Marathi—“betrayal” and “attack”—which reflect the movie’s themes of trust violations within personal relationships. The film is set in a remote region of Maharashtra, where the line between good and bad is blurred, and where the local people have fiercely protected their land for generations.
At its core, Ghaath revolves around three central characters: a mysterious wanderer, a cunning betrayer, and a confused law enforcer. Each character is accompanied by a local ally—a guide seeking freedom, a man with no past, and a young tribal girl searching for her place in the world. Their lives become intertwined in unexpected ways. In this lawless world, trust can easily be built and just as easily shattered. In Ghaat, fear itself becomes the foundation of trust.
