Meera Welankar: Motherhood Doesn’t Require Learning, It Comes Naturally

Celebrating motherhood is not about a single day. Meera Velankar, who plays a mother in the show Shiva, recalls how a particular scene had her get emotional and terrified.

She shared he experience, stating, “Until I became a mother, my entire focus was on my career. I used to work in advertising. They say life changes when you become a mother, but until it happens, you don’t understand the meaning of the phrase. After becoming a mother, you realize that you revolve around your child. Motherhood doesn’t require learning; it comes naturally. When my son was born, for the first few days, I used to have thoughts like, did he eat, did he burp, is he feeling hungry now? In all this, I forgot whether I had rested or not, and all this can only be experienced through motherhood. Any book on pregnancy, post-pregnancy, childcare, and child development was read, a lot of information was there, but when I became a real mother, I realized that while I have the knowledge, I lack the experience. My son was very shy and introverted. He needed time to open up to people, and because of this, I had to be there for him. I sometimes felt tired, and then I realized how important discipline is, not just discipline but also acceptance. I realized that my son’s nature is different, and I accepted it, and when I accepted it, I saw that he had become more outgoing. We were three sisters, my mother was a teacher, and she managed both home and work, she is my hero. I can thank her so much because what she could do, only a superwoman could do. My son is only 12 years old. However, on screen I play a mother to a much older boy. This has helped me understand how I can be as a mother when my son grows older. One story that I can share with you is, ‘Once you become a mother, you have one love in you, whether it’s an on-screen boy or a real boy. During that time, we were doing a scene where my onscreen son Ashu, doesn’t come home all night, and I, playing the mother, become extremely worried. The thought of this happening in real life terrier me. Suddenly during the shot, he comes home, and when I saw him, tears filled my eyes. At that moment, my heart was in turmoil."

So don’t forget to watch the beautiful moments between Ashu and Sitai in the Shiva at 9 pm only on Zee Marathi.
