The prestigious Zee Natya Gaurav 2024 awards ceremony has stirred up tremendous excitement in the Marathi theatre community, as it promises to celebrate excellence and talent. Among the highlights of this event is the announcement of the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, which will be bestowed upon veteran actor Mohan Joshi. In today’s Hindi and Marathi film industry, several stalwart Marathi artistes have made their mark. However, there are some versatile artists who have established themselves in both Hindi and Marathi theatre, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape. One such eminent figure is Mohan Joshi.
Born on July 12, 1953, in Bangalore, Mohan Joshi spent his childhood in Pune. The boy from Phatak Wadi soon rose to fame. His resonant voice became the talk of the town, with locals often referring to him as ‘Khatyal Mohan’ due to his impressive mimicry skills. Once, during a Holi celebration, when the residents were unable to procure ‘gava’ (a type of grass), Mohan Joshi, dressed as a woman, managed to procure it from the neighbor’s courtyard and brought the festivities back to life. Impressed by his talent, Mohan’s parents entrusted him to the guidance of renowned stage decorator ‘Baba Sathe’ at the Bharat Natya Mandir.
However, during his early years in a children’s play, Mohan Joshi left theatre due to lack of practice. He discontinued acting to focus on his studies. Yet, Mohan’s passion for the stage never waned, and he eventually returned to the limelight, captivating audiences with his performances.
Over the next 12 years, Mohan Joshi’s career flourished in children’s theatre. He showcased his talent in various plays like Janglatil Vetal, Ganaray Mulukh, Budhatyacha Pay Kholat, Ikdum Tikdam Vikram, and Rajkanya Netradevi. He continued his theatrical journey in college at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC), where he participated in numerous plays. His stellar performances earned him accolades and recognition.
After making a mark on stage, Mohan Joshi ventured into the world of Marathi-Hindi cinema, leaving an indelible mark with memorable characters in plays. He showcased his versatility and acting prowess on stage and on the silver screen, earning him the nickname ‘Mojo.’
For his contributions to the stage, Mohan Joshi has received numerous accolades, including awards from the Sangeet Natak Academy, Deenanath Mangeshkar Award, and Vishnudas Bhave Award. His presence has enriched the Marathi theater scene.
