This World Environment Day, National Geographic India steps away from the familiar and takes viewers somewhere far closer to home yet largely unseen. Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness, a feature wildlife documentary by Nat Geo Fellow and award-winning filmmaker Sandesh Kadur, premieres on 5th June at 12 PM and 9 PM on National Geographic.
Set entirely within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, India’s first UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve and one of its most enduring ecological landscapes, the film is a quiet reflection on a shared wilderness where life unfolds in remarkable harmony between people, animals and the land they inhabit together. Rather than viewing human presence and wild nature as opposing forces, Nilgiris explores the delicate, deeply intertwined rhythms that have evolved across these Blue Mountains over centuries. The film’s score, composed by Susheela Raman, Sam Mills and Neel Adhikari moves between the meditative and the urgent, mirroring the film’s own emotional register.
From sprawling tea estates and railway lines weaving through ancient shola forests, to towns that exist alongside thriving wildlife corridors, the Nilgiris reveal a landscape shaped equally by nature and coexistence. Here, elusive species continue to endure fragmented habitats, adapting, surviving and sharing space in one of India’s most extraordinary living wildernesses.

Through Nilgiris, I wanted audiences to experience this shared wilderness in all its beauty, complexity and fragility. What Kadur has captured over years of filming is something television rarely delivers tension and wonder in the same frame, and a landscape where the line between the wild and the everyday has long since blurred. The film took home Best Sound at the 2025 Jackson Wild Media Awards, one of the most prestigious honours in nature and science filmmaking.
Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness premieres on National Geographic India on June 5, World Environment Day at 12noon and 9pm.
