The Marathi theatre audience doesn’t just watch plays for entertainment — they seek something meaningful and thought-provoking. This strong belief was expressed by actor Pushkar Shrotri while speaking about his upcoming play. In the theatrical presentation ‘Sshhhhh….Ghabraycha Nahi’ he will be seen performing in a unique style and form, quite different from his earlier roles.
Pushkar shares that the concept for this production was born from the question, “What new can I do?” He says, “In my career, I’ve done various types of plays, but bringing the mysterious narratives of (playwright) Matkari to life on stage is a whole different responsibility.”
While working on a suspenseful play like “A Perfect Murder” with Badam Raja Production and director Vijay Kenkre, Pushkar realized that amid the crowd of comedic plays, the audience is craving something different. That’s when the idea of adapting Matkari’s mysterious stories for the stage took shape.
Ratnakar Matkari is a name deeply etched in the world of Marathi literature. Through his mysterious storytelling, he carved out a distinct and powerful niche. His stories go beyond fear — they connect with the human psyche. This play is a sincere attempt to reinterpret that writing style in a new form.
Sshhhhh….Ghabraycha Nahi is a theatrical presentation based on two of Matkari’s mysterious stories. Instead of keeping them confined to reading, the stories are brought to life for the audience using lighting, sound, acting, and visual elements. Pushkar says, “Globally, young audiences are drawn to genres like suspense, mystery, and thriller. So why should Marathi theatre be an exception? To be able to speak in Matkari’s literary language is a huge opportunity for me. Passing that language on to the next generation is my responsibility.”
The concept has been produced by Badam Raja Production, a company known for blending innovation with tradition and for creating bold theatrical experiments. This production isn’t just a performance; it’s a sensitive cultural bridge that deeply resonates with the audience through Matkari’s writing.
