Astrologer and tarot card reader Rinhee Suberwal sheds light on the deep spiritual significance of Makar Sankranti this year, which holds even more importance as it coincides with Ekadashi, a day dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
“Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into Capricorn and symbolises harvest, prosperity and fresh beginnings. It is considered the spiritual New Year in many traditions. This is the time when energies shift towards growth, positivity and forward movement,” says Rinhee.
She explains that this auspicious phase is ideal for starting new chapters in life. “From marriages and business ventures to new homes and personal resolutions, any new beginning initiated from Makar Sankranti is believed to receive divine blessings and long-term stability,” she shares.
The festival is celebrated across India in different forms. While til ladoos and kite flying mark the joy in North India, the same cosmic transition is honoured as Pongal in the South and Bihu in Assam. “All these festivals revolve around gratitude for harvest, nature and abundance,” Rinhee adds. With Ekadashi falling on the same day, the spiritual intensity becomes even stronger. “Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees observe fasts, perform Vishnu Pooja and avoid consuming rice. Instead, sattvik food, fruits and special vrat dishes are prepared to maintain purity of body and mind,” she explains.
Rinhee also highlights the importance of purification rituals. “Many people take holy dips in sacred rivers, especially in places like Haridwar and Rishikesh. This is believed to cleanse past karmas and invite divine grace. House cleansing, lighting lamps and welcoming fresh energy into the home are highly auspicious on this day.”
Dos for Makar Sankranti with Ekadashi: -Wake up early and take a holy bath or add Gangajal to your water. -Perform Vishnu Pooja and chant mantras. -Donate sesame seeds, jaggery, warm clothes and food. -Prepare fresh, sattvik dishes and offer them to the deity. -Fly kites, share til ladoos and spread joy.
Don’ts: -Avoid eating rice and non-vegetarian food due to Ekadashi. -Stay away from negative thoughts, arguments and harsh speech. -Do not begin the day without prayer and gratitude.
“Sankranti combined with Ekadashi is a powerful portal for spiritual cleansing, renewal and manifestation. It is a perfect time to let go of the past, purify the present and step into a brighter, blessed future,” Rinhee Suberwal shares.
