Rohit Sharma reveals why Mumbai Indians’ 2013 IPL final will always remain special

Every victory holds a special place in a sportsperson’s journey, but some achievements remain unforgettable. On Family Full House with Rohit Sharma, actor Arjun Bijlani and actress Helly Shah ask host Rohit Sharma about his favourite final that he played for Mumbai Indians, leading him to revisit the team’s memorable victories and share why the 2013 final holds a special place in his heart.

The conversation begins with Arjun Bijlani pointing out Rohit’s record with Mumbai, saying, “Aapne, I think, 5 cups jeete hain Mumbai ke liye. Toh 5 finals hue.”

(You’ve won, I think, five titles for Mumbai. So, that means you’ve played in five finals.)

Helly Shah then asks, “Toh sabse favourite final kaunsa hai?”

(So, which final is your favourite?)

Responding to the question, Rohit Sharma explains why the 2013 victory stands out for him. He says, “Bahut tough hai yaar, kyunki 2013 mein humne sabse pehli trophy jeeti thi aur pehli trophy aap kabhi bhi jeette ho, woh bahut special rehti hai. Aur woh mera pehla saal tha captaincy ka Mumbai ke liye. Toh woh isi liye special hai.”

(It’s very difficult to choose, because we won our first trophy in 2013, and the first trophy you win is always very special. It was also my first year as captain of Mumbai, which is why that one is special.)

Rohit also recalls the closely contested finals in 2017 and 2019, when Mumbai Indians defended a low total of 129 runs. Reflecting on how the game has evolved over the years, he adds, “Lekin uske baad 2017 aur 2019 mein humne bahut kam score banaye the, 129 runs, aur humne woh 129 runs defend kiye the. Aaj kal toh 129 runs 10 overs mein ban jaate hain. Uss time cricket thoda alag tha aur ab cricket thoda alag hai.”

(But after that, in 2017 and 2019, we scored very low totals of 129 runs and managed to defend them. These days, teams score 129 runs in just 10 overs! Cricket was different back then, and it’s different now.)

Reiterating his choice, Rohit concludes, “Lekin I think the first trophy will always be special so I think 2013.”

(But I think the first trophy will always be special, so I’d say 2013.)

Through this conversation, Rohit looks back at some of Mumbai Indians’ memorable finals, highlighting how the first trophy he won as captain continues to hold a special place in his journey.
