Sherleen Dutt: Film/TV capable of shaping public perception and sparking social change

Sherleen Dutt, who will soon be seen in Koi Jaaye Toh Le Aaye, feels the entertainment industry contributes hugely to making the country progressive and creating awareness about various issues. Speaking on the occasion of India’s independence, she said, “As India strives towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, the entertainment industry holds a mirror to society, reflecting its aspirations, challenges, and triumphs.”

“Cinema and television are powerful tools for storytelling, capable of shaping public perception and sparking social change. They can challenge outdated norms, inspire progressive thinking, and create a platform for diverse voices. By addressing social issues and promoting empathy, the entertainment industry can play a pivotal role in building a more developed and inclusive society,” she added.

She also mentioned ways in which Indian cinema and television can significantly contribute to the nation’s development and growth. She said, “By educating and raising awareness through compelling narratives, the industry can educate audiences about important social issues such as gender equality, environmental conservation, and mental health, fostering a more informed and aware populace. “By challenging stereotypes and portraying strong, complex characters from various backgrounds, the industry can challenge societal stereotypes and promote inclusivity and acceptance.”

“Preserving and Evolving Culture: While preserving India’s rich cultural heritage, cinema and television can also introduce modern values, creating a dynamic cultural landscape that embraces both tradition and progress. Economic Impact: The entertainment industry generates significant employment opportunities and boosts related sectors like tourism, contributing to the overall economic growth of the nation. National Unity, by celebrating India’s diversity and promoting stories of unity and resilience, cinema and television can strengthen the sense of national identity and pride, fostering a spirit of collective progress,” she added.

So what makes you feel truly independent living in India? “Living in India, I feel truly independent because of the freedom to express myself, pursue my passions, and make choices that align with my values. Independence to me means being able to follow my dreams, voice my opinions without fear, and contribute to the growth of our society,” she said.

“It’s the liberty to be true to myself, embrace my individuality, and work towards a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This sense of independence empowers me to not only grow personally but also to be a part of the nation’s journey towards becoming a Viksit Bharat.”
