Defying Limits: Shweta Chaugule's Journey to Weightlifting Glory

Meet Shweta Chaugule, the powerhouse who clinched a gold medal for India in the Masters 1 - 87+ category at the prestigious Mediterranean European International Masters Weightlifting Competition in Greece. This remarkable achievement is even more awe-inspiring considering Shweta’s journey began just two years ago during the pandemic.

Excerpts:

Congratulations on your impressive achievement of winning a gold medal for weightlifting in Greece while representing India. How does it feel to don the national colors on the podium?
Thank you so much for the wishes; it means a lot to represent my country. The feeling is surreal. I cried like a little baby at the age of 40 in Greece, the Mecca of Weightlifting. It’s special. Nothing feels more special than standing on the podium. It’s like a child making her parent proud. It’s just me and my lifts, and that moment is truly magical.

How did you discover your passion for weightlifting, especially considering you started just two years ago during the pandemic?
It started during COVID when everyone was at home. My coach noticed my physique and passion for weights during crossfit, and here we are. The barbell and lifters became my escape.

What are the pros and cons of being in the field of weightlifting?
Engaging in weightlifting instills stability, strength, and discipline. Like any sport, consistency and giving your best are crucial; you’ll encounter five bad days for every good one, but that’s the path to learning and progress. On the downside, starting at 38 made me wish I had begun earlier. Having the right coach is essential; blindly following anyone can lead to injuries, so ensure you have a coach who understands your needs.

Balancing a successful PR career and weightlifting must be challenging. How do you manage your time effectively?
I have a phase where I hibernate! My friends and family support me during this time, helping me prioritize what’s most important. While it’s not easy, having super support at home enables me to push through.

Being a mother of an 8-year-old adds complexity. How do you maintain a work-life balance while pursuing your athletic dreams and career?
My son is my biggest inspiration, pushing me to keep going. My family and friends are deeply involved, providing the freedom to practice and pursue my dreams. During a recent competition when my son had exams, my mom and hubby managed without stress. My friends kept him busy during Diwali while I was away. With such a support system, nothing can stop you from achieving your goals.

Winning a gold medal on the international stage is a dream come true. Can you share insights into the hard work and dedication that led to this achievement?
Hard work pays off. Stay focused, dedicated, and listen to your coach and body. Adequate rest is crucial—five days of hard work followed by two days of rest. Avoid steroids, stay natural, hydrate, and ensure good sleep. Age is just a number. I’ve met senior athletes who prove this. It’s never too late; don’t see age as a limitation. I turned what people saw as a weakness into my strength. It’s all in the mindset.

Share some tips on how you’ve maintained your physical fitness and strength
Follow your certified coach; they know best. Being fit isn’t just about losing weight and looking good; it’s about doing everyday things without discomfort. Don’t judge fitness by appearance; thin doesn’t always mean fit.

Fulfill your responsibilities, but remember, self-love is not negotiable

**Representation of women in sports is crucial. What message do you have for girls and young women aspiring to pursue a career in athletics?**To aspiring young women in sports: Embrace the challenge, break stereotypes, and prioritize yourself. Whether it’s walking, yoga, weightlifting, or competitive running, invest in your well-being. Fulfill your responsibilities, but remember, self-love is not negotiable. Exercise releases happy hormones, making you a happier person. COVID ignited my dormant passion; may it do the same for you.
