Somy Ali: I Finally Feel Safe In My Own Company

In a world where more people are embracing solo travel, solo dates, and spending time alone without hesitation, actress and humanitarian Somy Ali believes solitude is no longer something to fear but something to celebrate. Having experienced emotional pain, betrayal, and healing in her own life, Somy says learning to enjoy one’s own company can be deeply empowering. The founder of No More Tears opened up about finding peace in solitude, protecting her personal space, and how alone time helped her reconnect with herself after years of emotional exhaustion.

Speaking about the shift towards travelling, dining, watching films, and attending events alone, Somy shared that she sees it as “a beautiful, quiet revolution.” She said that after years of emotional pain and toxic relationships, people are finally choosing peace over performance. “For me, doing things alone is no longer lonely, it’s liberating. It’s a gentle way of saying, ‘I am enough, just as I am,’” she said.

Talking about her own journey with solitude, Somy revealed that she consciously chooses to spend time alone because it gives her a sense of peace and safety. “Whether it’s a quiet drive along the Miami coast at dawn, watching a film by myself, or simply sitting with a cup of tea and my thoughts, those moments feel sacred,” she shared. She added that after being surrounded by people who hurt her or took advantage of her kindness, solitude has become one of the greatest gifts she has given herself.

As the founder of No More Tears, Somy has closely witnessed the pain of loneliness among survivors of abuse and trafficking. Recalling one such case, she spoke about a young woman who had been trafficked and was living in her car with her two children. Through her NGO, the woman received housing, education, and emotional support, eventually rebuilding her life. She also shared the story of a young trafficking survivor who once felt invisible but later found strength after being surrounded by people who cared for her. “These stories remind me that no one has to stay lonely forever. Sometimes all it takes is one person who refuses to look away,” she said.

Somy strongly believes that spending time alone can help a person grow emotionally and mentally. Reflecting on her own experiences, she said solitude became one of her greatest teachers after enduring betrayal and abuse. “When you are alone, there is no one to perform for, no one to please, no one to take advantage of your kindness. You finally get to hear your own voice clearly,” she explained.

Speaking about the difference between loneliness and solitude, Somy said the key difference is choice and safety. “Enjoying solitude is peaceful because it’s a conscious decision to be with yourself. Feeling lonely is painful because it comes from fearing you will be hurt or abandoned again,” she said. She added that choosing peaceful solitude has been one of the most healing parts of her life journey.

The actress also admitted that she values alone time far more today than she once did. “For years I was surrounded by people on film sets, in relationships, and in the spotlight, and many of them took advantage of my trust, kindness, or silence. Now I fiercely protect my alone time,” she shared.

According to Somy, being comfortable in one’s own company is a strong sign of confidence and self-awareness. “It means you no longer need constant external validation to feel worthy. It means you have faced your pain, made peace with your past, and learned to be kind to yourself,” she said, adding that true freedom comes when no one can use your loneliness against you again.
