Actor Somy Ali works tirelessly, through her US-based NGO No More Tears, to help save, protect and rehabilitate victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual crimes. She says that despite doing such a noble deed, she is often abused, and threatened by perpetrators. She took to social media to share her thoughts on the matter.
“Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, “She doesn’t have what it takes.” They will say, “Women don’t have what it takes.” Please know that I am not playing the victim card and I speak for all women when I say this: Even in 2024, and a founder/president of a nonprofit for 17 years, the emotional, physical and death threats I have received are unimaginable. I am the biggest enemy for Domestic violence and Human Trafficking abusers as they see their victims not as humans, rather, commodities and a regular source of income. I take that away from them, hence I am despised for rescuing these victims as well as a threat to many others because I don’t have the key factor that they use on their victims (products) and that is FEAR,” she wrote.
She added, “This irks not just the abusers I face daily, but also many overseas who refuse to stand by my side as I am of no benefit to them whatsoever. I will never stop to help those whose voices remain unheard till my very last breath. This is a promise I made to myself and every single victim that is being abused while I type this.”
She sings off by saying she won’t stop doing what she does, come what may. “There’s no better way to go than doing what I love and stand for even if I am gone tomorrow. My legacy will be that I fought to the very end because I know what it’s like when we assume people will be there for you be it in the U.S. or Mumbai and you learn that they simply don’t care.”
