Sucheta Khanna: It’s Not Easy, But That’s What Makes Comedy Special

“Comedy is not easy, but once you have the craft, the sky is the limit,” says Sucheta Khanna, as she opens up about her latest project and her love for the genre.

Sucheta did not need much convincing when Office Office Chali Musaddi Ki Beti came her way. “It’s a cult show, and there’s a new approach to it,” she says. “Earlier, we had Mr. Pankaj Kapur, whose problems were never solved. But this is 2026, and now Musaddi’s daughter comes in and solves problems instantly. They also wanted someone from the family to bring that home atmosphere.”

Talking about her role, she shares, “There’s a bachelor Bua who is loud, happy-go-lucky, and doesn’t worry about anything. She has raised both the children and has dedicated her life to them.”

For Sucheta, the biggest pull was the chance to return to comedy. “Honestly, where are comedy shows even made nowadays? So, for me, doing a comedy show itself was one of the reasons I took this up,” she says.

She adds, “And secondly, Eagle Films and Mr. Rajan Waghdare. That combination was awesome. That itself was more than half the reason to say yes.”

Opening up about her journey, she credits her mentor Sachin Pilgaonkar. “Comedy is not easy, but it’s a craft. I’ve had fabulous mentors. Whatever I am in this industry is because of him. The way I was trained changed me completely as an actor.”

She continues, “I’ve learned comedy from people like Supriya Pilgaonkar, Reema Lagoo, and many co-actors. It’s not easy, but once you understand the craft, you can improvise, and then the sky is the limit.”

Explaining what comedy truly demands, she says, “It’s not just about performance. You have to be in the present moment, very attentive and focused. If your lines have layers and you need to improvise, then that combination becomes very premium. And I love doing it.”

Her character also evolved during workshops. “I thought to give it a zing, let’s make her a little flirtatious. Thankfully, Rajan ji and Umesh ji liked the idea. They tried it in a few episodes, and it worked. Now she’s glamorous, flirtatious, loud, charismatic, and very lovable.”

Speaking about the current television space, she says honestly, “Indian television today has very few comedy shows. Earlier, there were channels that only made comedy, but now even they have shifted to drama.”

On a personal note, she adds, “I miss comedy shows a lot. It’s such a refresher. Even today, people remember Lapataganj.”

For Sucheta, comedy is not just a genre—it’s an art that deserves more space. “You have to be present, focused, and aware. But once you get it right, there’s nothing like it,” she adds.
