Actor Sumit Kaul, who has been busy with web series such as Tanaav and films like Afwaah & Article 370 since the last four years, has returned to the small screen. The actor is part of the show Janani – AI ki Kahani, which will air on Dangal TV. Sumit plays the role of Paresh Parmar in Mrinal Abhigyan Jha Productions (MAJ).
“The show is very unique as it deals with the biggest challenge a mother could face, “Saving her child’s life from a dreaded disease”. That’s why this unique title is appropriate for our show. Also we as a society are in the middle of creating a new world, which will in many ways be led by artificial intelligence as we stand witness to the birth of new AI,” he says.
The subject is very unique and signifies that the content on Indian television is very progressive, he says, adding, “The subject aptly deals with the challenges faced when traditional meets, futuristic and highlights on equal measure, how both, maintaining core values, as well as adapting to new technology, will be equally important in the coming future.”
Talking about his character, he says, “I play a self-obsessed, super-intelligent, passionate scientist who wants to use science and new inventions to fulfil his personal ambitions. Instead of being inclusive in his approach, he is hyper competitive and very elitist in his mindset. He is the kind of man who chooses scientific work over everything else including family. I was attracted to this character because of the challenges that playing a megalomaniac brings with it. Also becoming a part of a subject that is pioneering is very exciting.”
He adds, “When I started working on the character, I found it very difficult to relate to him. His obsessiveness makes him very aggressive, overly competitive, narcissistic and terribly impolite but over a period of time I realised that we all have a side in us where we live in our fantasy world and are disconnected with reality. When I was able to find that place, it was easier to relate to my character Paresh Parmar.”
Talking the AI wave, he says, “AI has been part of our lives for several years now. It’s just that it’s impact and new waves of development in artificial intelligence are being expressly discussed today the quality of AI and its penetration power into our lives is only going to increase and the earlier we are able to adapt to this new way of living, the better it will be for us.”
Working with Abhigyan and Mrinal Jha is a treat, he says, adding, “I have had the pleasure of working with Mrinal and Abhigyan in the past on two different projects. I’m always super excited to collaborate with them. They’re writers who are far ahead of their time, are super Creative and are very encouraging towards the growth of artists they engage with. They have always created wonderful platform where creative people with different ideas, opinions and thought processes come together to create wonderful content.”
