Superboys of Malegaon: An earnest love letter to Cinema

On being asked why this particular story stuck with her, Akhtar said, “Nasir—the filmmaker, he is truly unique a person. He started the whole DIY filmmaking phenomena – back then none of us could’ve imagined that one could make a film with such limited resources, we know the effort it takes, and he started with so little. Yet, through sheer hustle, gathering friends, and pouring his heart into the story, he brought his idea to life. He put Malegaon on the map, and that is truly inspiring.” Superboys of Malegaon enables a more profound exploration of its characters’ emotional journeys, adding richness and dramatic nuance to their creative journeys. While celebrating Malegaon’s vibrant DIY filmmaking culture, the film goes beyond the surface, offering an intimate look into the lives of these filmmakers—their aspirations, hardships, and unwavering pursuit of cinema. It also sheds light on the unique challenges faced by aspiring directors in small towns, where access to equipment, funding, and industry opportunities remains limited. Written by Varun Grover, the film is set to release in theaters on February 28 across India, the US, UK, UAE, Australia, and New Zealand.
