The latest iteration presents three site-specific commissioned works by contemporary artists Angel Hui, Albert Yonathan Setyawan, and Dr. William Lim to grace the iconic façade and The Lobby, with an artist takeover of The Verandah Café from now to 5 May
The Peninsula Hotels launches the 2026 edition of its global ‘Art in Resonance’ programme during Hong Kong Arts Month at its iconic flagship hotel. This edition features commissioned works by Hong Kong artist Angel Hui and architect-artist Dr. William Lim, alongside Tokyo-based Indonesian ceramicist Albert Yonathan Setyawan in partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). Visionary new works adorn The Peninsula Hong Kong’s façade and The Lobby, with an immersive artist takeover of The Verandah Café. Reaffirming The Peninsula’s enduring commitment to cultural patronage, Art in Resonance offers guests and visitors captivating contemporary art encounters across the hotel.
“The latest iteration of The Peninsula’s global arts programme exemplifies our enduring commitment to fostering artistic innovation and cultural exchange in the cities we call home,” said Benjamin Vuchot, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of The Peninsula’s parent company, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited. “Together, in partnership with the V&A, we continue to commission exceptional works by contemporary artists of immense talent, supporting their journey towards international recognition and acclaim. Through these works, we endeavour to actively contribute to Hong Kong’s stature as Asia’s cultural hub, enriching the city’s dynamic arts landscape and spotlighting its creative energy to a global audience.”
“The V&A’s involvement in ‘Art in Resonance’ underscores our global mission to champion creativity, advance cultural understanding, and ignite inspiration among communities worldwide,” said V&A curator, Dr. Louis Copplestone. “Providing support to mid-career artists by giving them a platform to present significant new works is an exciting opportunity for artistic growth. At the core of our partnership lies a shared commitment to thoughtful interpretation and global engagement, weaving together narratives that transcend boundaries and cultures.”
Immersive Exhibition Embraces Craft and Culture at The Peninsula Hong Kong
Visitors are greeted by a shimmering installation on The Peninsula Hong Kong’s façade, Swimming in Light by Hong Kong artist Angel Hui. Adorning the first-floor windows of The Verandah, Hui extends her signature embroidered goldfish to a colourful reimagination of the hotel’s awning and iconic Rolls-Royce vehicles. She has recently been selected to represent Hong Kong at the upcoming 61st Venice Biennale alongside ‘Art in Resonance’ 2024 artist Kingsley Ng, underscoring her growing prominence on the international stage.
Centred around transforming everyday, ordinary objects into moments of quiet wonder, Hui’s shimmering goldfish catch the light and drift across the surface of the hotel. This motif turns The Verandah’s windows into a delightful choreography of colour and reflection for viewers outside and within. At the entrance to The Verandah, Hui’s renowned artwork of goldfish embroidered on plastic bags is exhibited, showing the inspiration for the whimsical façade installation.
In The Lobby, Tokyo-based Indonesian ceramicist Albert Yonathan Setyawan’s Metamorphic Modulation is the next to delight. In partnership with the V&A, the large-scale installation is presented in a purpose-built structure that surrounds viewers in a reflective shell.
While the work explores form and the ambiguity of perception, the artist’s conceptual investigations revolve around repetition and pattern-making. The artwork centres on two ambiguous forms, one evoking a leaf and the other a flower. Comprising over 700 individual pieces, the installation features ceramic works that are hand-modelled in clay, slip-cast in red terracotta, and left unglazed to celebrate the clay’s materiality. A crucial element of the installation is its play on shadows, casting a layered effect that blurs the boundary between sculpture, structure, and viewer. Metamorphic Modulation invites guests to experience the piece from different vantage points as it shifts in appearance.
The Verandah Café features a full artist takeover; an immersive installation, Walking On A Bright Future, fully transforms the space into an enticing landscape for guests to step into. In collaboration with Tai Ping, acclaimed Hong Kong architect-artist Dr. William Lim curates a live-in environment inspired by his oil painting, A Bright Future.
The installation combines a large-scale hand-tufted wall tapestry with a seamless checker-patterned floor carpet, meticulously crafted by Tai Ping artisans, to envelop visitors in an experience that seamlessly softens the boundaries between reality and imagination. Part of Lim’s Journey series, where he paints reflections on the past year, the painting depicts the hopeful perspective of a boy gazing into a crystal ball, imagining a world where fish leap across the sky, and the moon hangs low. Guests are transported into a surreal sanctuary rich with symbolic motifs and decorative allure.
