The Marathi theatre scene is currently abuzz with diverse themes, each drawing special appreciation. Adding to this rich repertoire is Urmilayan, a unique mythological play that blends music, dance, and deep emotional narratives. Produced by Sumukh Chitra and published by Anamika, the play is set to premiere on December 15 at Pune’s Annabhau Sathe Auditorium at 12.30pm. Written and directed by Sunil Harishchandra, this is Sumukh Chitra’s second theatrical venture, with Nikhil Jadhav as the executive producer.
The story centers on Urmila, a relatively neglected character in Valmiki’s Ramayana. Overshadowed by the prominent figures of Ram, Sita, and Ravan, Urmila’s voice often went unheard. Urmilayan seeks to bring her character to life and explore the many unanswered questions surrounding her existence. Featuring a cast of 16 actors, the play’s set design is by Arun Radhayan, and the music is composed by Ninad Mhalsalkar.
Urmila’s tale is one of quiet suffering and resilience. Deprived of divinity’s touch, she is portrayed as a deeply human figure, navigating life’s emotions and struggles. Despite her innocence, she endured an unjust exile while her husband Lakshman accompanied Ram to the forest. What must she have endured during those 14 years? How did she survive and keep herself going through this harsh period? Urmilayan delves into these questions, offering profound insights into her journey and the values her story imparts to human existence.
The play promises to be a compelling theatrical experience, with Niharika Rajdutt portraying Urmila, supported by a talented cast including Kalpita Rane, Pooja Sadhana, Shravani Gavit, Mrunal Shikhare, Nikita Rajak, Supriya Jadhav, Priyanka Ahire, Amol Bharti, Shivani Mohite, Ajay Patil, Shubham Badgujar, Parag Sutar, Divesh Mohite, Soham Pawar, and Pranav Chavan.
The producers and directors are confident that Urmilayan will offer audiences a memorable and thought-provoking theatrical experience, shedding light on one of mythology’s most overlooked characters.
