ZEE5 Global’s latest release, Costao, is a gritty and heartfelt film set in the 1990s, inspired by the true story of Costao Fernandes—a fearless customs officer who stood tall against a powerful empire of smuggling and corruption.
Directed by debutant Sejal Shah, the film stands out for its sincerity and grounded storytelling. There’s no overdramatization; instead, it leans into realism, allowing the narrative and performances to take center stage.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, as always, is exceptional. He doesn’t just play Costao—he becomes him. His portrayal is subtle yet powerful, and he brings depth and emotion to the role without ever overplaying it. There are moments where his performance alone is enough to leave a lump in your throat.
Priya Bapat, though in a smaller role, makes a strong impression as Costao’s wife. She plays the part with quiet strength and emotional vulnerability, offering a tender counterbalance to the film’s intensity.
The supporting cast, including Kishore Kumar G, Gagan Dev Riar, and Hussain Dalal, all add value to the story without ever stealing focus from the central arc.
Produced by Bhanushali Studios Limited in association with Bombay Fables Motion Pictures, Costao is written by Bhavesh Mandalia and Meghna Srivastava. It’s a story about integrity, sacrifice, and the lonely path of doing the right thing in a broken system.
