Featuring Yogi B, Arivu and Sean Roldan as judges, the upcoming non-fiction show on Zee 5 Global, in partnership with Zee Music, celebrates underground hip-hop talent through original performances and high-stakes battles
Celebrating the energy and evolving sound of Tamil hip-hop, Zee 5 Global, in partnership with Zee Music, announces Thee Kural, an upcoming non-fiction show that brings emerging underground artists together to compete to become the next voice of Tamil rap. Blending themed performances, creative challenges, intense rivalries and audience participation, the show celebrates originality, lyrical prowess and authentic storytelling.
The competition opens with a massive cypher introducing contestants, their personal stories and musical identities before moving into weekly themed episodes that challenge them to showcase their creativity, storytelling and stage presence.
The show features an esteemed judging panel comprising Yogi B, Arivu and Sean Roldan, each bringing a distinct perspective on lyrical expression, rap technique and musical composition. Standout performances earn recognition through the Thee Meter, while the strongest performers secure their place on the Wall of Fame. Contestants entering the Danger Zone face elimination, with another layer of competition and audience engagement adding to the stakes.
Holding the energy of the show together is the DJ/Big Bro, who connects contestants and judges, introduces weekly themes and drives the competition through its most intense moments.
With Thee Kural, created in partnership with Zee Music, our aim is to bring these hidden gems to the forefront and provide them with a platform that showcases their talent while earning them the appreciation of a wider audience. Through this unique format, we seek to celebrate raw talent, originality, and the courage to be heard. Backed by an experienced judging panel, a competitive format, and active audience participation, Thee Kural is an exciting addition to our content slate. As we continue to strengthen our offering with a diverse lineup of originals, movies, and non-fiction programming, we are thrilled to keep audiences engaged and entertained through the end of the year and beyond."
Yogi B, Judge, said, “Hip-hop was born in the Bronx in the 1970s, as Black and Latino youth facing inequality turned creativity into culture. Through DJing, MCing, breaking and graffiti, they found ways to tell their stories, represent their communities and celebrate life against the odds. Thee Kural brings that spirit to Tamil rap, giving contestants a stage to showcase their individuality, originality and craft. As judge, I’m looking for flow, delivery, lyrical depth, stage presence and realness. Be true to yourself, mean what you say and stand for what you represent. The competitive spirit must push us to raise the bar while respecting Tamil heritage and hip-hop culture. I look forward to discovering artists who honour hip-hop’s roots and take Tamil rap forward with skill and conviction. Theekural, bring it real!”
Arivu, Judge, said, “Rap has always been more than just rhythm and rhyme. It is a powerful way to tell stories, express lived experiences and speak about the world around us. What makes Thee Kural exciting is the opportunity it creates for emerging voices to bring their own realities, perspectives and identities to the forefront. I look forward to seeing artists who are willing to experiment, challenge themselves and stand by what they have to say. Ultimately, authenticity is what makes a voice memorable, and I hope this platform encourages contestants to find and own theirs.”
Sean Roldan, Judge, said, “Music is a constant process of discovery, and I am excited to see how the contestants on Thee Kural interpret different themes and translate their ideas into original performances. Rap offers immense room for experimentation, both lyrically and musically, and every artist brings a different rhythm, perspective and creative instinct to the table. I look forward to seeing contestants who are willing to take risks, develop their sound and bring something unexpected to the stage.”
