ZEE5 Global's Satluj Review: Honey Trehan's Honest Storytelling Refuses to Look Away

Satluj streaming on ZEE5 Global, is not an easy watch, nor is it meant to be. It is an important story, told with honesty and sensitivity.

Based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, the film is emotional, disturbing and deeply moving. It will make your stomach churn, leave you teary-eyed and stay with you long after it ends.

Director Honey Trehan deserves credit for telling this story with honesty. Set during Punjab’s insurgency in the 1990s, Satluj doesn’t rely on over-the-top drama or cinematic gimmicks. Instead, it keeps the storytelling simple, raw and real. That is what makes the film so powerful.

Diljit Dosanjh delivers one of the finest performances of his career as Jaswant Singh Khalra. His portrayal is understated yet deeply moving, capturing the quiet courage and unwavering determination of a man who risked everything in his pursuit of justice. Diljit doesn’t seek applause; he simply becomes Khalra, making every moment feel authentic.

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan is equally impressive as Paramjit Kaur (Pammi). She delivers a heartfelt performance and shines in every scene she is in. Her character adds warmth and emotional depth to the story.

Arjun Rampal also leaves a strong impression as the senior investigating police officer. He plays the role with quiet authority, grace and poise, adding a layer of control and restraint to the otherwise tense narrative.

The supporting cast is exceptional. Suvinder Vicky, as Surjit Singh Sugga, delivers a chilling performance that will leave audiences angry and disturbed, exactly as the role demands. Kanwaljit Singh, as DGP Inderpal Singh Bitta, is equally convincing, portraying the authority and menace of the establishment with remarkable conviction. Every supporting actor contributes meaningfully, making the world of Satluj feel painfully real.

Despite dealing with complex historical events, Honey Trehan keeps the narrative focused and engaging. He carefully pieces together the investigation without losing sight of the human cost behind it. The film is not just about exposing uncomfortable truths but also about honouring the courage of a man who refused to remain silent.
